b. Cěrmákovice, Czech Republic (then Cěrmakowitz), Sept. 24, 1854,
d. Vienna, Dec. 11, 1899, geographer, ethnologist, lecturer at the
University of Vienna. Travelled throughout Europe, Egypt and the
Sudan, in 1884/85 explored North-Eastern Africa with D. Kammel von
Hardegger, there he discovered the natural wonder of
Alêjo-Díble, which he called Franz Josef's gorge.
