Commuting, regular travel between a person's place of residence and
workplace (vocational commuters) or school (commuting school children,
students and trainees). Commuters can be broken down into daily,
weekly and monthly commuters. In many cases, commuters in Austria have
to travel considerable distances. Introduction or improvement of
existing transport facilities (such as the Federal Railways'
inter-city trains, rapid-transit lines, plant-operated passenger
transport) seek to meet commuters' needs. In Austria, commuting is
concentrated in and around the provincial capitals and other
conurbations. Commuting is a typical phenomenon of an industrial
society which has resulted in the separation between people's
workplaces and places of residence, while these had traditionally been
identical in agricultural societies. This development is documented by
the rapid increase in commuting between 1961 and 1981.
