Commuting, regular travel between a person's place of residence and 
workplace (vocational commuters) or school (commuting school children, 
students and trainees). Commuters can be broken down into daily, 
weekly and monthly commuters. In many cases, commuters in Austria have 
to travel considerable distances. Introduction or improvement of 
existing transport facilities (such as the Federal Railways' 
inter-city trains, rapid-transit lines, plant-operated passenger 
transport) seek to meet commuters' needs. In Austria, commuting is 
concentrated in and around the provincial capitals and other 
conurbations. Commuting is a typical phenomenon of an industrial 
society which has resulted in the separation between people's 
workplaces and places of residence, while these had traditionally been 
identical in agricultural societies. This development is documented by 
the rapid increase in commuting between 1961 and 1981.
