390 m, pop. 2,098, area 11.02 km%%sup 2/%, commercial and 
industrial town near the confluence of the Rivers Faule Aschach and 
Duerre Aschach, in the upper Hausruckviertel region. - District court, 
highway maintenance depot, production of switches, meat products, 
factory for leather goods, building industry, trade. - Documented 
mention around 1120; Gothic houses with Baroque and Classicist fronts; 
parish church redecorated in Baroque style (17%%sup th/%  century) 
with Gothic core, sculptures from the workshop of the Schwanthaler 
family, tombstones with heraldic ornaments (15%%sup th/%  
-17%%sup th/%  centuries), Holy Cross chapel (1711-1721); filial 
church of Maria-Hilf (1429/30); Renaissance palace (1571, provincial 
crib, peasant war museum, permanent exhibit on  Georg von Peuerbach), 
three-winged building with 2-storied portal (1574); pillory (1571), 
astrolabe chronometer on the town hall.
