Compulsory Portion: minimum share of certain beneficiaries in the 
value of a decedent's estate. Beneficiaries are the decedent's 
offspring (or, in the absence of offspring, ancestors) and spouse. The 
compulsory portions due to the offspring and spouse amount to one half 
of the amount they would have been entitled to in the case of 
intestacy and those of the decedent's ancestors to one third of said 
amount. In the presence of circumstances justifying an exclusion from 
succession (failure to render assistance in an emergency, long-term or 
life imprisonment, persistent misconduct) even the compulsory portion 
may be withdrawn.
