Pielach, River, Lower Austria, southern confluent of the River Danube, 
70 km long; average flow rate 6.5 m%%sup 3/%/sec., near 
Hofstetten. Rises north of Annaberg (alt. 976 m) in the northern 
Limestone Alps, crosses the Alpine foothills west of St. Poelten (alt. 
271 m), flows south of the Dunkelsteinerwald hill region and 
opens out into the River Danube near Melk (alt. 213 m). Most 
important tributary: Sierning (mouth near Haunoldstein). Towns: 
Kirchberg an der Pielach (alt. 400 m), Ober-Grafendorf 
(alt. 280 m), Prinzersdorf (alt. 252 m), Loosdorf (alt. 
234 m). The Mariazeller railway runs through Pielach valley from 
Ober-Grafendorf to the south of Kirchberg an der Pielach.
