Engineers, members of a military service with emphasis on technical 
work. As early as in the 17%%sup th/%  century units of soldiers with 
special skills were needed during sieges or for the construction of 
bridges for military use. In the late 19%%sup th/%  and early 
20%%sup th/%  centuries they were also responsible for the 
construction of field fortifications and the building and removing of 
artificial barriers. In the new (since autumn 1994) organisation plan 
of the Federal Armed Forces of the Second Republic, where the 
engineers enjoy a high reputation, in particular because of their 
rescue and relief work during natural catastrophes, the engineers have 
one regiment and three battalions.
