Smallpox vaccination, active immunisation against smallpox by means of 
a smallpox vaccine. Was introduced in the reign of Empress Maria 
Theresia and remained compulsory for a long time; the compulsory 
vaccination was repealed on December 30%%sup th/% , 1980 
after the eradication of smallpox (Federal Law Gazette, 
Bundesgesetzblatt BGBl 583/1980.
