Polar Research: Austria's most important contribution to Polar 
Research was the Austro-Hungarian  North Pole Expedition with the 
discovery of  Franz Josef Land. Before this expedition J. v.  
Payer had taken part in the exploration of Greenland. K.  Weyprecht 
initiated the "International Polar Years". In recent times 
Austrian scientists have been part of the exploration of Spitzbergen 
and Jan Mayen.
