Partitions of Poland: partition of the Polish state forced by its 
neighbours Austria, Russia and Prussia in the 18%%sup th/% 
 century. By the first partition in 1772 Galicia and Lodomeria 
fell to Austria, Austria did not receive any land from the second 
partition in 1792, but the third partition in 1795 gave Austria 
western Galicia (from the Vistula Valley to the north to Piliza and 
Bug east of Warsaw), which ultimately had to be ceded to the 
"Grand Duchy of Warsaw" in 1809. Most of the territories 
received from the first partition remained with the Austro-Hungarian 
Monarchy until 1918.
