Whipping was a standardised punishment for certain crimes according to 
historical penal codes. Whipping was abolished in 1848 for civilians; 
a general ban followed in 1867. The military penal codes of 1855 
introduced a new regulation for whipping, which was practised in 
modified form until the end of the Monarchy.
