b. Innsbruck (Tyrol), March 21, 1932, d. Vienna, July 16, 2011, painter and graphic artist. 
Representative of informal action painting, 1956 one of the founders 
of the group around the Galerie St. Stephan (with W.  Hollegha, J.  
Mikl and A.  Rainer); 1983-2000 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts 
in Vienna. Initially influenced by constructivism and until the 
mid-1970s used only red tones in his works, later created spontaneous 
compositions with a vibrant use of colour and often linked with travel 
impressions ("California Paintings", "Etruria" series, "Umbria" 
series, etc.). Also designed glass windows (e.g. St. Marien in Enns, 
1975) and tapestries.
