b. Bischofsheim (Germany), Nov. 16, 1778, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 28, 1854, technologist. Pioneer of technical education 
in Austria, 1809/1810 director of the Academy of Navigation in 
Trieste, 1815-1849 founder and director of the Polytechnical Institute 
in Vienna; drew up its constitution and organisational structure. 
Constructed a gas production plant with J. Arzberger; founding member 
of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
