Press Council, (Presserat), institution of voluntary press 
self-control founded by the  Verband oesterreichischer Zeitungen 
(Austrian Newspaper Association) and the Trade Union for Arts, Media 
and the Liberal Professions (Division of Journalism) in 1961. The 
Press Council monitors adherence to professional duties, the image of 
the Austrian press and the observance of the basic right of freedom of 
the press.
