Przemýsl (Poland), in the historic region of Galicia, 
Przemýsl served as Austria´s main fortress against the 
Russians at the beginning of World War I, but was abandoned on March 
23, 1915. Approximately 120,000 men were taken prisoner by the 
Russians. Przemýsl was recaptured on June 3, 1915.
