b. Lainz near Vienna, July 7, 1874, 
d. Theresienstadt concentration camp (Terezín, Czech Republic), 
spring 1944, zoologist. university professor in Vienna, 1906 with 
L. von Portheim and W.  Figdor founded the biological research 
institute in the Vienna Prater park ("Vivarium"), which was exemplary 
as a research centre for experimental zoology (destroyed in 1945). 
Constructed chambers with a constant temperature and introduced a new 
method of "autophoric" transplantation. 1939 emigrated to Amsterdam, 
from where he was deported to the concentration camp.
