Purgstall an der Erlauf, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Scheibbs, alt. 299 m, pop. 5196, area 55.98 km%%sup 2/%, 
situated in the Alpine Forelands. - Indoor sports centre, Lower 
Austrian provincial home for juveniles; factory for saws and cutter 
bars, construction firms, commercial enterprises. - Late Gothic parish 
church (1418-14 50), pillared hall church with a Baroque choir and 
aisles (1712); high altar by A. Zach (1783), auxiliary altars with 
paintings by F. Wageschoen (1762) and M. J. Schmidt; pulpit and 
organ date from the Rococo period (around 1760), grave stones 
depicting figures (16%%sup th/% -18%%sup th/%  century); Renaissance 
castle from the 16%%sup th/%  century (first documented mention in 
1120), fortified construction with a high Gothic chapel (14%%sup th/%  
century); fire brigade museum; museum of local history (includes 
archaeological finds).
