Quadruple Alliance: alliance of four European powers formed to protect
the prevailing political and military balance of power. Austria was a
member in four such alliances: 1) The Quadruple Alliance of London of
August 2, 1718 between Great Britain, France, the Dutch Republic
(United Provinces) and Austria formed to prevent Spain from carrying
out its political aims in Italy which endangered the Treaty of Utrecht
(1713). As a result of the Quadruple Alliance, Austria was awarded
Sicily in exchange for Sardinia. 2) Quadruple Alliance of Warsaw of
January 8, 1745 between Austria, Great Britain, Saxony and the
Netherlands with the aim of winning back Silesia from Prussia in the
War of the Austrian Succession. 3) Quadruple Alliance of Chaumont of
March 1, 1814 between Austria, Russia, Prussia and Great Britain was
formed to continue the war against Napoleon with the aim of reducing
France´s borders to those of 1792. This Quadruple Alliance was
renewed on November 20, 1815. 4) Quadruple Alliance of London of July
15, 1840 between Great Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria, formed to
protect the Ottoman Empire.
