Quadruple Alliance: alliance of four European powers formed to protect 
the prevailing political and military balance of power. Austria was a 
member in four such alliances: 1) The Quadruple Alliance of London of 
August 2, 1718 between Great Britain, France, the Dutch Republic 
(United Provinces) and Austria formed to prevent Spain from carrying 
out its political aims in Italy which endangered the Treaty of Utrecht 
(1713). As a result of the Quadruple Alliance, Austria was awarded 
Sicily in exchange for Sardinia. 2) Quadruple Alliance of Warsaw of 
January 8, 1745 between Austria, Great Britain, Saxony and the 
Netherlands with the aim of winning back Silesia from Prussia in the 
War of the  Austrian Succession. 3) Quadruple Alliance of Chaumont of 
March 1, 1814 between Austria, Russia, Prussia and Great Britain was 
formed to continue the war against Napoleon with the aim of reducing 
France´s borders to those of 1792. This Quadruple Alliance was 
renewed on November 20, 1815. 4) Quadruple Alliance of London of July 
15, 1840 between Great Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria, formed to 
protect the Ottoman Empire.
