Quartz, mineral, SiO%%sup 2/%. Quartz, quartzite and quartz sand 
deposits have been used since the Middle Ages, mainly for glass 
production. Currently, only high-quality quartz sands are used for the 
production of glass, while ordinary quality quartz sand and quartzite 
serve for building materials and metallurgical purposes. In 1993 the 
Austrian mining authority supervised 100 quartz sand pits and 14 
quartzite quarries; production totalled 4,301,625 tons of quartz 
sand and 429,446 tons of quartz and quartzite.
