Lower Austria and Staatssekretaer at the Federal Ministry of Defence; 
1966-1970 member of the Lower Austrian provincial government, 
1970-1977 Federal Minister of the Interior; 1971-1983 member of the 
Nationalrat; 1977-1983 Federal Minister of Defence, 1983-1991 
president of the pensioners' association of the Austrian Socialist 
Party.
