b. Gmunden, Upper Austria, Sept. 25, 1897, 
d. Wels, Upper Austria, Aug. 19, 1987, graphic artist. Studied from 
1913 to 1917 at the Munich Academy and rapidly gained recognition for 
his woodcut book illustrations. As a teacher (Folkwang School, Essen 
1922-31, ''Hochschule'' ''fuer Kunsterziehung,'' Berlin-Schoeneberg 
1934-44, ''Staatliche Akademie der'' ''bildenden Kuenste'', Stuttgart 
1947-60) Roessing exerted considerable influence on the development of 
graphic arts in Germany. From 1950, the artist abandoned the woodcut 
technique and concentrated on the linoleum cut process, while his 
latter years, from 1982, were devoted to drawings.
