Reinsurance, form of protection for insurance companies. It enables 
them to take greater risks that would otherwise exceed their financial 
capacities, and reduces insurance companies' overall risk at the same 
time. The only companies which currently offer exclusively reinsurance 
protection are the Vienna-based Wiener Rueckversicherungsgesellschaft 
(founded in 1869) and the Generali 
Rueckversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft (founded in 1977). The majority 
of the other insurance companies are active in both reinsurance and 
direct insurance.
