Ržiha, Franz von, b. Lipová, Czech Republic (then Spensdorf), March 28, 1831, 
d. Semmering (Lower Austria), June 22, 1897, engineer, pioneer in 
tunnel construction. In the service of the Duchy of Brunswick 
developed a new method of tunnel construction in 1861, using a steel 
structure instead of the usual wooden frame. From 1878 professor of 
railway and tunnel construction at the University of Technology in 
Vienna.
