Ranftl, Johann Matthias, b. Vienna, Jan. 20, 1804, 
d. Vienna, Nov. 1, 1854, painter (genre and historical paintings, 
landscapes). Studied at the Vienna Academy under J. P.  Krafft, 
1826/27 travelled to Moscow and St. Petersburg, 1836 in London and 
Paris. His early works were mainly landscapes and historical 
paintings, his later works mostly genre paintings (many with 
socio-critical content). Given the epithet "dog Raffael" because of 
his many paintings of dogs; also known for a number of paintings of J. 
 Nestroy in costume.
