Rappottenstein, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Zwettl, 
alt. 671 m, pop. 1,844, area 65.72 km%%sup 2/%, near the 
confluence of the rivers Grosser Kamp and Kleiner Kamp, in the 
Waldviertel region. - Concrete works, wood processing, summer tourism. 
- The town and the castle were founded by the Kuenring family during 
the first half of the 12%%sup th/%  century. Parish church of 
Rappottenstein, redecorated in Gothic style, Romanesque core, Baroque 
side altars, neo-Gothic high altar; pillory (1613), the castle is 
located on a forested hill summit above the river Kleiner Kamp, 
probably founded by Rapoto von Kuenring (1157-1176), by the 
16%%sup th/%  century it had been extended to comprise five outer 
courts and seven gates; typical example of a large medieval castle 
protected by height, 30 m high castle keep, inner court arcaded, 
frescoes from the Renaissance period and Gothic chapel (encompassing 
two storeys) with Gothic winged altarpiece (mid 15%%sup th/%  
century). Kirchbach parish church (15%%sup th/%  century), altered in 
Baroque style in 1720; Kirchbach open-air museum. Roiten local 
heritage museum, designed by F. Hundertwasser.
