Rattenberg, Tirol, town in the district of Kufstein, alt. 521 m, 
pop. 526, area 0.11 km%%sup 2/%, smallest town in Tirol, situated 
on the right bank of River Inn, opposite the mouth of the 
Brandenberger Ache river. - District court, branch of the regional 
health insurance agency, museum of the Augustinian Order (since 1993); 
centre of Tyrolean glass design. - Conferred the status of a town in 
1393, was a Bavarian fortification and customs post until 1504, after 
that Austrian territory. Ore mining near Rattenberg was responsible 
for the town's prosperity (approx. from 1420). - Late Gothic and 
Renaissance houses (valley roofs, oriels, portals) give the town an 
almost homogeneous appearance; ruins of castle (documented mention in 
1254, partly demolished after 1782), only its Romanesque part with 
castle keep have been preserved; Gothic parish church (rebuilt 
1473-1506, redecorated in Baroque style around 1730) with frescoes by 
B. Faistenberger and M. Guenther; former Augustinian (1384-1782) and 
Servite monastery (1817-1970) with church in Baroque style (finished 
in 1708), with stucco decorations by D. F. Carlone and Paolo 
d´Allio, vault paintings and murals (1708-1711) by J. J. 
Waldmann, monumental high altar; north of the church, late Gothic 
cloister and chapel (Hoferkapelle, consecrated in 1498); late Gothic 
hospital church (built around 1500).
