Raxendorf, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Melk, alt.
506 m, pop. 1,132, area 36.25 km%%sup 2/%. Built around a village
green, situated in a deep circular valley west of Jauerling Mountain.
- Day-care centre for the disabled (Caritas), recreation centre,
quarry. - As a member of the Babenberg family or an emperor was
supposedly rescued from mortal danger there, the town was granted a
court privilege, documented mention 1263 as "publicum placitum
liberorum", confirmed for the last time in 1755. Parish church in
Baroque style (1756-1758); pilgrimage church of Heiligenblut
(tabernacle miracle in 1411, Chapel of Origin), late Gothic three-nave
hall church with pyramidal roof, two-bay choir (mid 15%%sup th/%
century), the interior is in late Gothic style. Eight-metre high
tabernacle, stained glass (late 15%%sup th/% and 16%%sup th/%
centuries), high altar (around 1730); rectory (1784); Hausegg ruins.
