!!!Realschule

Realschule, since the 18%%sup th/%  century name for a
vocationally-oriented school type which was introduced officially in
Austria for the first time under the School Administration Act of
1805 (three-year course for training business people, cameralists,
farmers and "superior craftsmen"). The Organisationsentwurf of 1849
provided for a six-year Realschule with general education
(re-organised in 1851). It was not until 1868 that this type of
Realschule, with modern foreign languages instead of Latin, and focus
on mathematics and scientific subjects started competing with the
Gymnasium. Until 1927 the Realschule was a seven-year school, when it
was turned into a eight-year school type which was put on an equal
footing with the Gymnasium secondary school. Since 1962 the Realschule
has been called Realgymnasium.
