Rebell, Joseph, b. Vienna, Jan. 11, 1787,
d. Dresden (Germany), Dec. 18, 1828, landscape painter. Studied at the
Vienna Academy under F. A. Brand and under M. Wutky and made
construction drawings for the architect L. de Montoyer. From 1810 in
Milan, worked at the court in Naples and in Rome, returned to Vienna
in 1824 and followed F. H. Fueger as director of the imperial
and royal picture gallery in the Belvedere Palace, taught landscape
painting at the Vienna Academy. Strongly influenced by English and
French painting, was one of the earliest landscape realists in the
German-speaking countries.
