Rechtspfleger, civil servants at court charged with the simpler 
affairs of civil law in the first instance to relieve the judges of 
some of their workload. They are mainly responsible for default 
actions, attachment of property and private insolvencies. They are 
also in charge of the land register and company register. They are 
subject to instructions (Weisungen) by the judges responsible for 
their specific fields of activities. Proceedings on appeal are passed 
on to these judges or to the appropriate higher instance.
