!!!Reder, Walter

Reder, Walter, b. Jeseník, Czech Republic (then Freiwaldau), Feb. 4, 1915, 
d. Vienna, April 26, 1991, officer in the armed section of the SS. 
Early supporter of the NSDAP in Austria, 1934 fled to Germany, member 
of the Austrian  Legion, joined the armed section of the SS. As a 
member of the 16th SS armoured infantry division at Marzabotto (near 
Bologna) he ordered a massacre of civilians in Sept. 1944 in 
retaliation for partisan attacks. R. was sentenced to life 
imprisonment in Italy (Gaeta fortress). Pardoned in January 1985 and 
allowed to return to Austria. His welcome by the then Federal Minister 
for Defence F.  Frischenschlager was politically controversial in 
Austria.
