!!!Reichsinsignien
Imperial Insignia (and Imperial crown jewels), symbols of the rule of
the Roman emperor and German king, kept in the Secular Treasury in
Vienna: Imperial crown, Imperial orb, sceptre, Imperial sword
(Mauritius sword), Imperial cross and relics (Holy Lance), some of
which are kept in valuable reliquaries. The Imperial insignia were
usually held in safekeeping by the king (emperor) in fortresses such
as the Trifels in the mid-14%%sup th/% century in the Cistercian
monastery of Stams in the Tirol, then at Karlstein in Bohemia. From
1424 they were kept in Nuremberg and were only given to the ruler for
coronation ceremonies and for assemblies of the Imperial Diet. In 1800
the Imperial insignia were taken to Vienna to safeguard them from the
French, in 1801 the Imperial gospels, St. Stephen´s purse
reliquary and sabre from the Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) Minster were
added to the collection. Apart from two occasions when the Imperial
insignia were moved (1805 to Buda and 1809 to Temesvár) to
prevent them falling into the hands of Napoleon they were permanently
kept in Vienna, until Hitler had them taken to Nuremberg in 1938. In
1946 they were brought back to Vienna, where they have been on display
in the Secular Treasury of the Vienna Hofburg palace since 1954.
