Reiter, Johann Baptist, b. Urfahr near Linz (Upper Austria), May 28, 1813, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 10, 1890, genre and portrait painter, studied at the 
Vienna Academy under F. X.  Petter, J. N.  Ender and L.  
Kupelwieser, financed his studies by painting porcelain, initially 
painted mainly historical paintings, influenced by Classicism and the 
Nazarene school. Eventually turned to genre painting and Biedermeier 
realism, later influenced by A.  Romako. Popular portrait painter 
(Princes Liechtenstein and Esterházy).
