Reptiles in Austria: All species present in Austria are protected
snakes: common viper (not found in Burgenland and in Vienna), sand
viper (found only in Carinthia and in Styria), Aesculapian snake (not
found in Vorarlberg and Tirol), smooth snake, dice snake (not found in
Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg), grass snake. No evidence for the
occurrence of Orsini´s vipers has been found for since 1973,
they are considered extinct. - Slow-worms: blindworm. - Lizards: sand
lizard, green lizard (not found in Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg),
common lizard (the lowland variety is acutely endangered in Lower
Austria and Burgenland because of loss of habitat, extinct in Vienna),
Horvath´s rock lizard (only in Carinthia), common wall lizard
(not found in Vorarlberg and Salzburg). - Tortoises: The European pond
terrapin (apart from some released individual animals) can only be
found in small numbers in the Danube Wetlands.
