!!!Ressel, Josef

Ressel, Josef, b. Chrudim (Czech Republic), June 29, 1793, 
d. Ljubljana, Slovenia (then Laibach), Oct. 9, 1857, inventor. Studied 
at the University of Vienna and at the School of Forestry in 
Mariabrunn, from 1817 forestry official, 1821-1835 in Trieste, from 
1839 service in the navy in Venice, from 1852 as Naval Forestry 
official. Beside his career as a civil servant he worked on several 
inventions, for which he was granted 10 privileges, including presses, 
steam machines, pneumatic post, a steam mill and a method for the 
production of soap. His most important invention was the ship´s 
propeller in 1827, first tested in 1829 in a large-scale trial on the 
steamer "Civetta" in the port of Trieste.
