b. Vienna, Dec. 31, 1853, 
d. Klagenfurt (Carinthia), July 29, 1925, social democratic 
politician. Trained as a wood turner and founded the first union to 
represent that profession; 1889 became the first secretary of the 
social democratic party. Editor of the "Arbeiterzeitung", from 1900 
member of the Vienna Municipal Council, 1907-1918 member of the 
Reichsrat, 1919-1923 first social democratic mayor of Vienna, which 
became a separate province during his term of office.
