Riedel, Josef Gottfried, b. Frydlant, Czech Republic (then Friedland), Jan. 17, 1803, 
d. Vienna, Nov. 7, 1870, physician, reformed of the care of the 
mentally ill in Austria; director of Prague mental hospital, 1851 
called to Vienna as director of the mental hospital (est. in 1849). 
Turned the  Narrenturm into a nursing home, introduced clinical 
teaching and a humanistic aspect into psychiatry.
