Riegger, Paul Josef, b. Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), June 29, 1705, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 2, 1775, teacher of national ecclesiastical law, 
father of Josef Anton  Riegger. 1733 professor at the University of 
Innsbruck (natural and international law, German law), from 1753 at 
the University of Vienna and at the Theresianum (diplomatic academy), 
advisor to Maria Theresia. As a representative of the Enlightenment 
advocated the influence of the state in church matters and prepared 
the intellectual ground for the Josephine reforms.

Institutiones jurisprudentiae ecclesiasticae, 4 parts, 
1768-1772; Elementa juris ecclesiastici, 2 parts, 1774/1775. - 
textbooks on state and eccl. law in Latin and German.
