Rochleder, Friedrich, b. Vienna, May 15, 1819,
d. Vienna, Nov. 5, 1874, chemist. Pioneer in plant physiology,
professor at the Universities of Prague and Vienna (1870-1874).
Discovered a number of distinctive substances in plants, concentrated
on natural colourants (alizarin, purpurin, quercitrin, litmus),
discovered the relation between caffeine, uric acid and creatine, was
the first to discover the phenomenon of homology, established the
fundamentals of modern phytochemistry and structural chemistry.
