Pipelines, means of transport for liquids and gases. In Austria, 53.6 
million tons of goods were transported through pipelines in 1991. 
Pipelines account for 35 % of transnational transport of goods 
(51.9 million tons). Advantages of pipelines over other means of 
transport: resistance to atmospheric corrosion, minor negative 
environmental impact, low costs. Disadvantages: limited to gases and 
oil, limited transport routes, high fixed costs.
