Rosthorn, industrialist family; were made members of the nobility in 
1790. Matthaeus the Elder (1721-1805), a button manufacturer, was 
called to Vienna from England by Maria Theresia in 1765 and founded a 
rolling mill at Fahrafeld (Lower Austria) in 1792. The mill was taken 
over by his son August (1789-1843), who moved it to Oed an der 
Piesting as a brass rolling mill and wire factory in 1816. The 
brothers August, Franz (1796-1877) and Matthaeus the Younger 
(1782-1855) acquired large iron and coal deposits from the Crown in 
the Lavanttal (Carinthia) in 1825.

In 1830, they founded the first steel rolling mill in Carinthia 
(Frantschach), in 1833-1835 they opened the most important puddle and 
rolling mill of the area at Praevali (Slovenia), where the first rails 
for the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn railway were produced.
