Rothschild, most influential family of bankers in Europe during the 
19th century, originally from Frankfurt am Main. They were made 
members of the nobility in 1816 and were represented in Austria by a 
branch of the family which included the following personalities: Baron 
Salomon Meyer von  Rothschild, Baron Anselm Salomon von  Rothschild, 
Baron Albert Salomon Anselm von  Rothschild, Baron Nathaniel Meyer von 
 Rothschild und Baron Louis Nathaniel von  Rothschild.

In addition to banks, the R. family also owned insurance companies, 
coal and mercury mines, heavy industries and building companies. The 
Rothschilds were also famous patrons of the arts; they built the R. 
palace in the fourth district of Vienna and the R. hospital in the 
18th district. Both were destroyed during World War II (today the 
palace houses the Chamber of Labour; the former hospital the Institute 
for Economic Development of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce)
