Rottmayr, Johann Michael, baptized Laufen (Germany), Dec. 11, 1654,
d. Vienna, Oct. 25, 1730, painter of altarpieces and frescoes. First
prominent painter of the Austrian baroque; 1689 painter at the court
in Salzburg, from 1696 worked in Vienna. His large-scale highly
decorative paintings combine Italian elements with characteristics of
the Flemish Baroque (Rubens) to form a new style marked by ideal use
of space and by brightly-coloured, lively figures. R. was held in high
esteem, particularly by J. B. Fischer von Erlach.

Dreifaltigkeitskirche, 1697, Mirabell Castle, 1723/1724. - Vienna:
Gartenpalais Liechtenstein, 1706-1708; Peterskirche, 1713/1714;
Karlskirche, 1725-1730. - Lower Austria: Klosterneuburg, 1729;
Heiligenkreuz (high altar), 1696; the monastery of Melk, 1716-1722/23.
- Frain an der Thaya, Breslau (both Czech Republic), Pommersfelden
(Germany), 1716.
