!!!Rumorwache
Rumorwache: When Vienna's city fortifications were rebuilt in
1529/1530 regulations governing the guarding of the new fortifications
were necessary. Around 1540 the "Tag- und Nachtwache"
("day and night watch") guard unit was created, and in 1569
the name was changed to "Stadtguardia" (city guards). In
1592 the Stadtguardia was made an imperial unit. After 1640 the newly
created "Rumorwache" and the reinstated Tag- und Nachtwache
began carrying out police duties in a narrower sense. It was not until
the 18%%sup th/% century that a military police force was first
established.
