Rupertinum, Collections of the Province of Salzburg, Museum of modern
European art opened in Salzburg in 1983, originated from a collection
left by Friedrich Welz to the Province of Salzburg in 1975. As well as
organising exhibitions, the Rupertinum strives to enlarge its
holdings, which comprised some 12,000 works in 1998, including works
by Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar
Kokoschka and Arnulf Rainer. The collection also contains the Austrian
Photographic Gallery ''(Oesterreichische'' ''Fotogalerie),'' the
largest collection of contemporary photographic art comprising more
than 15,000 works by some 300 photographers (1998).
