Russ, Karl, b. Vienna, Aug. 11, 1779, 
d. Vienna, Sept. 19, 1843, painter, father of Leander  Russ. Studied 
at the Vienna Academy, painted scenes from mythology and from 
antiquity, later chiefly motifs from Austrian history; 1806 assisted 
in the work on the interior of the Albertina, from 1810 painter in the 
service of Archduke  Johann commissioned to document traditional 
Styrian costumes, from 1818 curator of the imperial picture gallery in 
the Belvedere.
