!!!Russ, Leander Russ, Leander, b. Vienna, Nov. 25, 1809, d. Kaltenleutgeben near Vienna, March 8, 1864, painter of landscapes, historical and genre scenes, son and pupil of Karl Russ. Studied at the Vienna Academy, travelled to the orient as a companion of the diplomat and orientalist Count A. Prokesch von Osten, 1843 stayed in Italy. Concentrated on motifs from Austrian history, painted mostly watercolours, 1841-1848 created numerous pictures for peep-show boxes for Emperor Ferdinand I depicting scenes from his reign. !Literature W.
