Russegger, Josef Ritter* von, b. Salzburg, Nov. 18, 1802, 
d. Banská Štaivnica, Slovakia (then Schemnitz), June 20, 
1863, geologist, mining expert and naturalist. 1822-1826 studied at 
the Academy of Mining and Forestry in Schemnitz, then worked in the 
gold and silver mining industry in Salzburg. 1835-1841 explored the 
ore deposits in Asia Minor, Egypt and in the Sudan during an 
expedition, then returned to Salzburg and became director of the 
Academy of Mining in Schemnitz in 1850.
