Avocet, dove-sized, long-legged, black-and-white bird having a long, 
slender bill that curves upward; swims and dives well; its flight 
seems slightly awkward. Only breeding place in Central Europe is 
around Lake Neusiedl because the avocet needs salt water; about 40 
breeding pairs in 1994.
