SPAR Oesterreich Warenhandels-AG, wholesale and retail enterprise 
dealing in all types of foodstuffs, as well as in meats and cold 
meats, wine, spirits, coffee and tea. One of the largest Austrian 
trading companies; created in 1970 through the merger of ten large 
Austrian trading enterprises. In 1999 and 2000 SPAR took over several 
branches of Julius  Meinl AG. In 1999 the company had 1,502 shops 
across Austria (SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR) with a total turnover of 
ATS 45.42 billion and 25,944 employees; consolidated group
