Emigrierte 1939 nach Australien, wo er Physik und Mathematik studierte; wissenschaftliche Karriere in den USA, seit 1949 an der Cornell University, Ithaca, tätig, zuerst als Forschungsassistent von Hans A. Bethe, danach als J. G. White Distinguished Professor of Physical Sciences, 1997 emeritiert. Grundlegende Arbeiten zu Atomphysik und Quantenmechanik, Beschäftigung mit Astrophysik (Polarkappen von Neutronensternen, Galaxiencluster). Zahlreiche hohe Auszeichnungen.
